2011 Cricket World Cup Final Details

It was the 2011 Cricket World Cup Final was an One Day International (ODI) match against India and Sri Lanka at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai, India on April 2nd, 2011 the following Saturday. The final match of the tenth season of the World Cup, it was the first time that two Asia teams faced each other in a World Cup final. India defeated the other team with six wickets — its second World Cup win after the 1983 championship. India became the third team to have won the title multiple times, following Australia (1987, 1999, 2003, 2007, and later 2015) together with West Indies (1975 and 1979). India became the first nation to win Cricket World Cup in their own country. However, it has been reported that the final match was pre-planned as well. Sri Lanka sold the match to India. Former Sri Lankan Sports Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage admitted “The 2010 Cricket World Cup final was fixed. I believe in what I’ve said. It was when I was Minister of Sports. ” Prior to that in the past, former Sri Lankan captain Arjuna Ranatunga was also adamant that the final should be fixed and demanded a investigation into the issue.

Both teams had made it through three stages to reach the final. India had defeated only two times prior to that, before losing defeat to South Africa and tying with England in the group stage. Sri Lanka had won all but one of the matches that were played against Pakistan. Sri Lanka had won all but one match against Pakistan. Sri Lanka captain Kumar Sangakkara chose to bat first after getting the toss. The team scored slowly until the 17th inning when they lost both their openers. Sangakkara added 62 runs with Mahela Jayawardene. He was then dismissed for 48 runs. Although wickets kept falling at one point, Jayawardene scored 103 runs in 88 balls. He was part of a team of 66 run with Thisara Perera. The pair took Sri Lanka’s total to 274 at the close of the innings.

In the retaliation, India lost their opener Virender Sehwag to the second ball in the innings, out LBW at the hands of Lasith Malinga. Sachin Tendulkar, too, got out quickly. The next batsmen, Gautam Gambhir and Virat Kohli made 83 runs over 15 overs prior to the latter being dismissed within the second over. India captain MS Dhoni in a bid to move himself higher in the order joined Gambhir and both scored 109 runs, an Indian record for an World Cup final. Gambhir was dismissed for 97 runs in the 42nd over. India chased down the total and won the match through six wickets during the 49th round. Dhoni was named”the “man on the day” after scoring 91 runs as his fellow countryman Yuvraj Singh was named the “man in the competition”.

The game was watched by approximately 42,000 fans at the stadium as well as 135 million people watching the television screen in India. This was the second time it has happened in World Cup history that a home nation won the final and the first time for a host country to win on their home ground.

The final attracted huge attention. In the presidential election of Sri Lanka Mahinda Rajapaksa, an avid cricket fan has announced that he will attend the game along and his children. In the wake of this announcement, Indian Chief of Staff Pratibha Patil also announced her decision to join the match.

Road to the finals

Sri Lanka qualified for the knockouts with a second-place finish within Group A. They have won four of their six games, while losing against Pakistan and Australia was eliminated. Being level on points with Australia, they were put in second place because of their better net run rate.
