The NDA exam is conducted by UPSC for admission to the Army, Navy, and Air Force wings of NDA, an exam for candidates aspiring to join defense forces including the Army, Navy, and Air Force. Entrance Gate, is a national-level examination, which is conducted twice a year. NDA-I and NDA-II are meant to help candidates make a career in defense services.

The National Defense Academy and Naval Academy (NDA & NA) exam will be a two-stage process where candidates will first have to appear for the exam and then qualify for the personality test or interview conducted by the Services Selection Board (SSB). UPSC is solely responsible for issuing guidelines for the selection and final conduct of the entrance test. Lakhs of candidates appear for this national-level defense entrance exam.

Candidates who want to serve the nation by joining the Defense Forces can start applying after the official release of the NDA Exam. To apply online for NDA, candidates must fulfill all the eligibility requirements set by the commission. Eligibility Criteria

Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) sets NDA eligibility criteria along with the notification. As per the eligibility criteria of NDA, unmarried male candidates who have completed their class 12 or equivalent examination can apply for the exam. NDA eligibility criteria include nationality, age limit, educational qualification, and physical standards that candidates must fulfill to be eligible for the exam. Therefore candidates are advised to check the eligibility criteria before filling out the NDA application form. This is as follows-

 

Nationality

To apply for NDA, candidates should be

  1. a citizen of India, or
  2. a subject of Nepal, or
  3. a subject of Bhutan, or
  4. A Tibetan refugee who came to India before the 1st of January 1962 with the intention of permanently settling in India, or
  5. A person of Indian origin who has migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka, and the East African countries of Kenya, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire and Ethiopia, Vietnam with the intention of permanently settling in India.

Provided that the candidate belonging to categories 2, 3, 4, and 5 must be a person in whose favor a certificate of eligibility has been issued by the Government of India. An eligibility certificate is not required for Gorkha candidates of Nepal.

 

Age Range

  1. Only unmarried male candidates should not be less than 15.7 years of age at the time of application and 16 years at the time of commencement of the course.
  2. The upper age limit of only unmarried male candidates should not exceed 18.7 years at the time of application and 19 years at the time of commencement of the course.

 

Note-

  1. Usually, the age is calculated from the 2nd of July of the exam year for NDA-1 and the 1st of January for NDA-2.
  2. Simply put, the age of the candidates should be between 16.5 years to 19.5 years to be eligible for the exam.
  3. Female and married male candidates are not eligible to apply for the NDA exam.
  4. The date of birth mentioned in the application should be the same as recorded in the Matriculation / 10th / Secondary School Leaving Certificate.
  5. After the declaration of the result of the written test candidates have to submit the age proof.
  6. Only unmarried male candidates can apply for the exam. Candidates should not get married till they complete their training. The candidates who get married during the training will be discharged and will have to refund all the expenses incurred on them by the government.

 

Educational Qualifications

The Union Public Service Commission has prescribed a minimum level of education qualification that a candidate must possess in order to be eligible for the NDA exam. Candidates must have passed at least the 12th board exam to appear in the NDA/NA exam. The detailed NDA education qualification required is given below, like-

 

For the Army Wing of NDA – The candidate must have passed the 12th class from the 10+2 pattern of School Education or an equivalent examination conducted by the State Board of Education or University.

Candidate must have passed class 12 or equivalent examination with Physics and Mathematics from 10+2 pattern of school education conducted by a State Board of Education or a University for the Air Force and Naval Wings of NDA and for 10+2 Cadet Entry Scheme in the Indian Naval Academy should |

  1. Candidates appearing in class 12th or equivalent examination are eligible to apply.
  2. Candidates appearing in the class 11th exam are not eligible for this exam.

 

Physical Standards for Navy-

Candidates aspiring to join the Navy are required to fulfill the following requirements, such as-

 

Seating Height- Minimum 81.50 cm and Maximum 96 cm.

Leg Length- Minimum 99 cms and Maximum 120 cms

Thigh Length- Maximum 64 cms.

Visual standard

The following visual standards must be met to be eligible for the NDA exam, such as-

 

Vision standard for army

far vision (correct) better eye  6/6; worse eye 6/9

Colour vision CP- III (defect safely).

Myopia – 2.5D. should not exceed

Long Vision +3.5D. should not exceed

 

Vision standard for air force

Candidates wearing spectacles are not eligible for Air Force

Minimum farsightedness 6/6 in one eye and 6/9 in the other eye

Correctable to 6/6 for myopia only

 

Colour vision CPI Hyperopia: +2.0 d SPH, Manifest myopia: Nil

Retinoscopy Myopia: 0.5 in any meridian permitted astigmatism: + 0.75 D Cyl (within + 2.0 D.Max)

 

Vision Standards for Navy-

  1. Not cured without glass – 6/6, 6/9
  2. Glass-cured – 6/6, 6/6
  3. Limit of myopia- -0.75
  4. Limits of Hyper Sightedness – +1.5
  5. Binocular Vision-III
  6. Limitations of Colour Perception – I

 

Also, candidates should get themselves medically examined to ensure that they are not suffering from any of the following minor conditions-

 

  1. Wax (ear)
  2. Deviated Nasal Membrane
  3. Hydrocele / Phimosis
  4. Overweight / Underweight status
  5. Under Size Chest
  6. Haemorrhoids
  7. Inflammation of Tonsils or Mumps
  8. Gynecomastia
  9. varicocele

 

The eligibility of NDA in terms of physical and medical standards is much higher than mentioned above. Hence, candidates are advised to check the official notification for more clarification on the National Defence Academy eligibility criteria.
