On Teacher’s Day Remembering Great Guru Dr. Radhakrishnan

Teacher’s Day is celebrated in India every year on September 5th to honor the contributions of teachers to society. The day is named after Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, the second President of India, who was a renowned scholar and philosopher.

Dr. Radhakrishnan was born in Tiruttani, Tamil Nadu, in 1888. He was the second of three children. His father was a subordinate revenue official in the service of a local landlord.

Dr. Radhakrishnan’s Education

Radhakrishnan was a brilliant student and received a scholarship to study at Madras Christian College. He graduated with a master’s degree in philosophy in 1906.

After graduating, Radhakrishnan taught philosophy at several universities in India. He also traveled to Europe and the United States to study and lecture.

In 1921, Radhakrishnan was appointed as the Spalding Professor of Eastern Religion and Ethics at Oxford University. He was the first Indian to hold a professorship at Oxford.

Radhakrishnan returned to India in 1931 and was appointed Vice-Chancellor of the University of Madras. He served in this position until 1936.

Teacher’s day

In 1947, Radhakrishnan was appointed as the first Vice-President of India. He was elected President of India in 1962. He served as President until 1967.

Radhakrishnan was a great scholar and philosopher. He was also a great teacher. He is remembered for his contributions to Indian philosophy and for his promotion of religious harmony.
