Four Activities to Avoid Infectious Bacteria and Viruses

Most automobile or truck owners have allowed a bit of a mess to collect inside their vehicle. Sometimes we just can’t be bothered to give it the cleaning ongoing maintenance it clearly requires, and it’s typically not a big deal, with the worst that may happen being some uncomfortable odors. Infectious Bacteria and Viruses

However, it is now evident that we must take car maintenance considerably more seriously in order to avoid the spread of bacteria and viruses. You may believe that having a cluttered interior is innocuous, but an unclean vehicle can serve as a breeding ground for bacteria and viruses, which can subsequently be spread to others.

Fortunately, staying on top of things isn’t difficult! Here are four activities you can do to your vehicle to help prevent the spread of dangerous bacteria and viruses:

  1. Before and after driving, wash your hands.

Even if you’re sick of hearing it, it’s still important to remember to wash your hands before and after using your vehicle. To assist avoid bacteria from transferring to and from your vehicle, sanitize the fingers, palms, and beneath the nails with antibacterial hand soap (or hand sanitizer).

You risk spreading infections and viruses to the handles, steering wheel, and other surfaces throughout the vehicle if you don’t, so be vigilant and start cleansing those hands before and after every trip. Any passenger is in the same boat!

   2. Within the cabin, sanitize all surfaces.

Get some disinfectant swabs and clean down all of the vehicle’s hard surfaces with them. Basically, whatever you’re likely to contact while driving should be cleansed with these wipes to help destroy bacteria and viruses and protect them from transmitting.

For understandable reasons, make sure to clean the steering wheel thoroughly – it’s the most touched surface within the car and may harbor bacteria for longer than you think. A steering wheel, for example, is thought to contain up to four times the bacteria found on a toilet seat!!

Don’t forget about the electronic system’s many knobs and dials, shift sticks, indication sticks, and any other less-frequently used surfaces that can still harbor bacteria.

  3. Upholstery with Isopropyl Alcohol

Rinsing upholstery with disinfect wipes or sprays too vigorously may damage the material, so use a different cleaning solution for these areas of the vehicle. Isopropyl alcohol with a minimum concentration of 70% is effective at killing bacteria on these softer surfaces without causing damage.

You won’t need to clean the entire upholstery; instead, focus on high-touch areas like armrests, though a quick clean down of all surfaces wouldn’t harm.

 4. Clean Leather with Soapy Water

While isopropyl alcohol is an excellent cleaner for most surfaces, its ability to remove strain means that it can harm genuine leather. If you have a leather inside, use a soap and water solution to gently rub down the surfaces to remove bacteria.
