Ways to Remove Red Wine Stains from Upholstery

It’s the worst. You have friends coming over for dinner and you just finished setting your beautiful table with your best china, silverware and glasses. As you’re pouring the wine to go with dinner, someone knocks a glass off of the table and it shatters all over your white carpet or light colored upholstery. Don’t panic! There are several Upholstery cleaning Perth tips that you can do to get rid of red wine stains from both fabric and hard surfaces

Removing Red Wine Stains from Carpet

Step First:  grab an old towel or cloth diaper and place it on top of the stain. Then pour some cold water on top of towel so that it soaks through and sits on top of the stain. If you don’t have a towel or cloth diaper, paper towels will also work for this step.

Step two: Sprinkle salt generously onto the red wine stain and then pour some more cold water over it so that it soaks into the carpet underneath as well as sits on top of the stain.

Step three: Scrub at the stained area with another old towel, cloth diaper or paper towels soaked in very warm water. Continue to scrub until all traces of the red wine are gone from both your carpet and under layers! You should see light colored fibers once you brush off any residual wine after scrubbing with a wet cloth. Repeat if necessary until all remnants of red Wine stains are gone

Step four: Blot dry with a clean towel and if necessary, repeat steps once more.

Removing Red Wine Stains from Fabric

Step one: Brush or scrape away as much of the solid particles of the wine that you can by using a dull knife or spoon. Avoid digging at any fibers as this will cause additional damage to your fabric.

Step two: Mix together warm water (about 2 cups) and either oxygen-based cleaner, Potassium Hydroxide (sold as KOH and found in most hardware stores). Make sure that you follow all of the package directions when adding these products together.

Step three: Dip a clean white cloth into your mixture and dab at the stained area. You should start to see red wine coming up on the fabric when you remove your cloth. Repeat until all traces of the red wine are gone according to package instructions.

Step four: Rinse the area thoroughly with cold water, blot dry with a clean towel and allow it to air dry. To speed up drying time, place a fan near where you’re working so that it’s blowing towards the stain while it dries. Make sure that it is not pointed directly at or facing towards any fabric during this process! (This can cause shrinkage.)

Removing Red Wine Stains from Walls

If your wall is painted, you can use exactly what we mentioned in steps one and two above. If its plaster or drywall, you will need to mix up a solution of water and either oxygen-based cleaner, Potassium Hydroxide (sold as KOH). Make sure that you follow all of the package directions when adding these products together.

Removing Red Wine Stains from Wood

Step One: if you have hardwood floors, your best bet is to use a cleaner/stripper product sold for this purpose. Make sure that the brand you choose is safe for light colored wood as well as finished surfaces so that it doesn’t damage your wood flooring or strip off any protective coating!

Step two: Lay a clean cloth towel over the red wine stain and pour warm water over it until the towel is completely saturated with wetness. You’ll need a second clean cloth, or a different clean section of your original one, to start blotting at the stained area again. Continue to dip fresh sections of cloth into warm water and blot until all traces of red Wine are gone from the wood.

Step three: When the stain is gone, allow it to air dry. For faster drying time, you can use a fan in combination with blotting with clean cloths until the stain is removed. Make sure that it isn’t pointed directly or facing your wood flooring when using this technique though! (This will cause shrinkage.)

Removing Red Wine Stains from Paper

If you have wallpaper hung in your home, simply moisten an old towel or cloth diaper with warm water then start scrubbing at the red wine stain right away. You should be able to remove it very easily since there is usually only one layer of paper on the wall. If you have paint on your walls instead of wallpaper, do not wet them! Use a commercial paint remover product following all of the package directions exactly.

When using paint remover, it’s best to wear gloves and goggles as the fumes from these chemicals are very strong and can cause lung damage if inhaled! Step two: After you have removed all wine stains from your wall with your paint remover, go over it again with a clean cloth and warm water to make sure that all traces of red wine stain is gone. If not, repeat according to package directions.
