Last weekend, Sheffield United suffered a 3-2 Championship loss to Millwall and will be looking to recover against Watford this weekend. They currently lead Middlesbrough by four points in the second-tier standings and can go top with victory this weekend.
Paul Heckingbottom will be looking to restore Sheffield United’s performance against Watford and is likely to bring Billy Sharp back into the starting eleven – providing him with a major boost. This could prove beneficial for the Blades boss in the long run.
Goals
After consecutive losses to Middlesbrough and Millwall, Sheff Utd needed to find some form of victory to keep their promotion bid alive. A 1-0 victory against Watford gave Paul Heckingbottom’s men a huge boost in the race for automatic promotion; an own goal from Ryan Porteous sealed all three points.
After a quiet opening 10 minutes, Watford got on the attack and had their first real chance with Keinan Davis firing wide after being freed by Ahmedhodzic’s foul. Just as United were getting settled into their game, they were awarded a penalty kick!
Mullin stepped up to take the spot-kick and sent it flying into the top corner! This is his eighth FA Cup goal this season, giving Phil Parkinson’s side a much needed boost.
Goalkeeping
Sheff Utd secured their place in the automatic promotion spots with a 1-0 victory against Watford thanks to a second half Ryan Porteous own goal. Middlesbrough had lost two previous matches, allowing Middlesbrough to close the gap to seven points, so they were delighted to return to winning ways in their return match.
Sheff United’s goalkeeping was outstanding once again, keeping Watford at bay throughout the game. Despite having a goal ruled out for offside, Daniel Bachmann kept out Sander Berge and Oliver Norwood before making an important save in the closing minutes to deny John Fleck a goal.
Sheff Utd were the better side in the first half and had more possession than Watford but failed to capitalize. Oliver McBurnie’s header was bundled past the post by Ryan Porteous for their only clear chance. Ndiaye should have gone ahead early in the second half but Daniel Bachmann saved his shot before Norwood headed a free kick wide of the target.

Possession
Sheffield United returned to winning ways with a 1-0 victory against Watford at Bramall Lane. Senegal international Iliman Ndiaye opened the scoring after an impressive first half, chipping a clever finish over Lee Nicholls to give United a commanding lead they would not relinquish.
Town were not without issues and managed to retain possession, particularly in the second half when Sorba Thomas, Duane Holmes and Danny Ward surged forward. Their attacks were often effective and they created several scoring chances.
In the 54th minute, Jack Rudoni drove into the penalty area and then passed it back to Holmes; he took a touch and tried to shoot but his effort went straight at Foderingham. It was Town’s best chance of the game and an indication that their possession was clicking.
Attack
Sheffield United were victorious against Watford, scoring one goal in each half to take a point. Chris Wilder’s side are currently sitting second in the table but need to start scoring more goals if they hope to challenge for automatic promotion.
They possess some talented attacking players, but they must find a way to get the ball past their defenders. So far in the league, they’ve scored 13 fewer goals than their opponents while conceding more as well.
In the opening half, The Blades had several opportunities and almost fell victim to a great save from Foster. John Fleck saw his first-time touch from close range blocked away by the Watford goalkeeper.
Sheff Utd’s attack was the main reason they managed to secure a draw, but their defence still needs improving and an adjustment in formation may be just what the doctor ordered this weekend. They need their big players to step up.
