It has been negotiating with the state government to acquire land to set up a tyre manufacturing unit. The proposed plant would cover an area of 290 acres in the industrial park developed by the State Industries Promotion Corporation of Tamil Nadu. Initially, Michelin plans to hire 1,500 people for the project. The company plans to export half of the tyres it produces.

In the passenger vehicle segment, Michelin has been a pioneer, becoming the first French company to manufacture tyres in India. It has been credited with the star labelling scheme by the Government of India, and its Pilot Sport 4 SUV tyres have been awarded a 5-Star rating. Michelin aims to become India’s leading tyre manufacturer in the country.

In 2004, Goodyear tyres make their debut in the country. Three products were launched: Eagle F1 and Ducaro GA. In 2006, the company launches its branded retail concept and Excellence series luxury passenger car tyres. The company also introduces new technologies including Silica Tread Compound Technology, 3 Zone Technology, and ECO-Silica Tread Compound. These new technologies enable tyres to provide superior comfort and precise handling both on dry and wet surfaces.

As a global brand, Goodyear is currently focusing on India’s commercial automotive market and is evaluating the potential of the country. It has two manufacturing plants in India – the Faridabad district of Haryana, and Aurangabad district of Maharashtra.
